Chimneys take the full force of the weather. Over time, mortar crumbles, bricks crack, and leadwork fails. If left unchecked, an unstable chimney isn't just a leak risk—it's a safety hazard.
Chimneys take the full force of the weather. Over time, mortar crumbles, bricks crack, and leadwork fails. If left unchecked, a unstable chimney isn't just a leak risk—it's a safety hazard.
At Shelter Essex Roofing, we repair, restore and rebuild chimney stacks across Essex using skilled repointing, watertight leadwork, and long-lasting rendering. No patch jobs. No guesswork. Just a safe, solid chimney that stays weatherproof for years.

These aren’t cosmetic issues – they’re signs water is getting in and weakening the structure.
Your chimney stack takes more punishment than any other part of your home. It's the highest point, fully exposed to wind from all directions. Rain hits it directly. The sun heats one side whilst the other stays cold. Frost penetrates deep into the brickwork.

Coastal winds carry salt that accelerates mortar deterioration. We see the effects constantly - chimneys just 15 years old with mortar that's turned to powder. Victorian chimneys that have lasted 120 years are suddenly failing within a decade.
Temperature cycling is another major factor. On a sunny winter day, the south-facing side of your chimney can be 15°C warmer than the north-facing side. This constant expansion and contraction work the mortar joints loose and create cracks in the render.
Once water gets into your chimney - through failed pointing, cracked render, or missing lead flashing - it's trapped. The structure gets wet, then frost expands that water, forcing cracks wider. Each freeze-thaw cycle causes more damage.
Wet brickwork also allows salt to migrate through the structure. When it dries, salt crystals form and expand, causing bricks to "spall" - the face of the brick literally breaks away.

Stage 1: Mortar starts to deteriorate, and small cracks appear.
Stage 2: Water penetrates, causing damp patches inside.
Stage 3: Bricks start to spall, structure weakens.
Stage 4: Chimney becomes unstable, dangerous to leave standing.
Stage 5: Emergency takedown required, often costing £5,000-10,000.
